How to Make a Chocolate Berry Green Smoothie

how to make a chocolate berry green smoothie

Step 1: Gather ingredients

Leafy greens – for the “green” part of this smoothie, spinach and/or kale are excellent options, but you can use any leafy green of your choosing.

Berries – this recipe calls for 1 cup of frozen berries. I particularly enjoy a mix of strawberries and blueberries, but you can use whichever berries you have on hand or like best (just think of which ones you’d enjoy with chocolate).

Banana – banana helps make this smoothie creamy and naturally sweet. If using fresh berries, you’ll want to use frozen banana to make the smoothie colder and thicker.

Lemon juice – just a squeeze of lemon juice is added to help enhance the berry-ness of the blend, and for the health benefits (see below).

Cocoa powder – for the chocolate part of this smoothie, we use cocoa powder (or cacao powder which is the slightly less refined version) which is chocolate in a more pure and raw form, and is actually very healthy (see below).

Milk – use any milk of your choice for the liquid base.

Yogurt – this recipe calls for plain, unsweetened, Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt really makes this smoothie so creamy, smooth, and decadent. It also adds a lot of protein as an added bonus!

Optional bonus ingredients:

  • Splash of vanilla extract to enhance the flavours
  • 1-2 pitted dates to make it sweeter
  • Scoop of chocolate protein powder to boost the protein content

Step 2: Blend!

Add all ingredients to a blender in the following order: liquid, greens, soft ingredients, hard ingredients (i.e. frozen berries added last).

Blend for 30-60 seconds until completely smooth with no grains or chunks.

Pour into glasses and enjoy your decadent chocolatey green smoothie!

Chocolate Berry Green Smoothie Benefits

This smoothie offers so many health benefits.

First of all, it has a very high antioxidant content.

All of the main ingredients in this smoothie – chocolate, berries, and greens, contain significant amounts of antioxidant compounds called polyphenols.

Polyphenols have amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can potentially lead to health benefits such as reducing risk of chronic inflammation and obesity, cardiometabolic diseases, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Berries, including strawberries and blueberries, contain a type of polyphenolic compound called anthocyanins.

Chocolate, specifically cocoa or cacao powder, is rich in polyphenolic compounds called flavanols.

Leafy greens like kale are known to contain many beneficial bioactive compounds including polyphenols.

This smoothie is also quite high in protein.

The milk and yogurt in this smoothie form a protein-rich base. Greek yogurt in particular has a ton of protein to offer.

And if you opt to add in your favourite protein powder, you’ve got yourself a hefty protein shake to get your through the day!

In addition to these amazing antioxidant and protein benefits, this smoothie is also packed with essential nutrients.

Leafy greens like spinach and kale pack in heaps of micronutrients, including iron, folate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, and more.

Lemon juice is added because it is high in vitamin C which enhances the absorption of the iron from the leafy greens.

Banana also offers vitamin C, in addition to minerals like potassium and magnesium.

And milk and yogurt are sources of nutrients like calcium, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, and more, not to mention healthy fats and the gut-friendly probiotics from the yogurt!
