If you are not a fan of the sourness of kefir or just want to try a new way of drinking it, this strawberry banana kefir smoothie recipe is just what you need to transform your kefir into a delicious and naturally sweet drink!
So, if you’ve got five minutes and three ingredients, let’s get blending!
How to Make a Strawberry Banana Kefir Smoothie
Step 1: Gather ingredients
Kefir – You can use any kind of milk-based kefir, whether from your own kitchen counter or from the grocery store. Kefir definitely has a sour tang to it, but this is countered by the sweet fruits in this smoothie. Start with one cup of kefir, but you can always add more since the smoothie is sweet enough.
Strawberries – Strawberries are both naturally sweet and a little tangy, so they add the perfect amount of fruitiness to this smoothie. You can use either fresh or frozen strawberries.
Banana – Lastly, you need banana to pull these few simple ingredients together into one perfectly-balanced smoothie. A ripe banana is naturally sweet enough to balance out the sourness and acidity of the kefir and strawberries. It is also creamy, which helps improve the texture and cohesiveness of the smoothie. You can use either fresh or frozen banana, chopped up.
Note: Use at least one frozen fruit (either frozen strawberries or frozen banana) for optimal thickness and frostiness in your smoothie.
Step 2: Blend!
Add all ingredients to your blender (frozen ingredients added last) and blend on high for about 30-60 seconds until thoroughly smooth.
Pour into glasses and enjoy!
Strawberry Banana Kefir Smoothie Benefits
While this smoothie only has three ingredients, it is packed with all sorts of health benefits. The advantage of using wholesome ingredients such as these is that they offer so much, both flavour-wise and nutrient-wise, that you really don’t need anything more.
Kefir:
First up is kefir – an excellent source of probiotics.
Probiotics are the “good” bacteria and microbes that help keep your gut microbiome, and your overall body, balanced and regulated. We are only just beginning to understand the true importance and value of a healthy gut microbiome, but just know that it effects and influences pretty much all systems and functions of the body, from digestion, to immune response, to blood pressure, etc.
Drinking fermented drinks such as kefir can help maintain a strong population of healthy bacteria in your gut, which can then help improve digestion, metabolism, immune response, and more.
In addition to the probiotic benefits that come the fermentation process, kefir also comes with all the other nutritional benefits found in dairy products. These include dietary protein, healthy fats, calcium, zinc, vitamin D, B vitamins, and other important nutrients. The protein and fat are beneficial components as they help regulate metabolism and blood sugar (which would otherwise spike with the naturally high-sugar fruits in this smoothie), and they make the smoothie more satiating.
Strawberry:
Next up are strawberries, which offer vitamins and minerals, fibre, and antioxidants, among other nutritional benefits. In particular, strawberries contain powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins, which work to neutralize free radicals in the body and thus reduce harmful oxidation and inflammation.
Banana:
Finally, banana adds additional fibre and important micronutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium.
For such a simple, sweet, and tasty smoothie, I bet you wouldn’t think there were so many nutritional and health benefits loaded in there!
