blender gasket

If you’re wondering, “Can I use a blender without a rubber ring?”, this post answers that question and more.

You’ve probably seen that rubber ring on your blender – perhaps it collects gunk and is annoying to clean, or maybe it slips off all the time and gets lost in your kitchen.

This rubber ring is also known as a gasket, and is actually quite an important component to your blender.

Read on to find out more about what a gasket does, how to clean it, and if you can use a blender without it.

What Does a Gasket Do in a Blender?

A gasket is important for preventing your blender from leaking.

The rubber ring creates an air-tight seal between the jug and the base of the blender, thus preventing your ingredients from leaking out from the bottom of the jug during or after blending.

So, if you’re wondering why your blender leaks or how to stop your blender from leaking, the first step is to check your gasket.

Where Does the Rubber Ring Go in a Blender?

The rubber ring, or gasket, is usually located at the base of the jug where the blade assembly attaches. The gasket seals any gap between the blade plate and the jug.

Depending on the design of your blender, the gasket may or may not be easy to find, remove, clean, etc.

In most standard blender styles, the jug has a threaded jar skirt attached to the base which keeps the blades attached to the jug and can easily be slipped onto the motor base for blending. The rubber ring is wedged between the jar and the blades, but you might not be able to see it because it is all held together with the jar skirt.

In other blender styles, such as the Nutribullet or other bullet blenders, that rubber ring is again going to go where the blending container meets the blade assembly.

How Do You Clean a Blender Ring?

To properly clean a blender ring, you will want to remove it from the blender and give it a good clean by hand or in the dishwasher (if dishwasher-safe). No matter how tight the seal, it seems like food always manages to sneak its way under the gasket. A simple overall rinse/wash of the jug won’t always cut it.

In most standard blenders (as described above), you will need to unscrew the jar skirt and remove the blades in order to remove and wash the blender ring. Once clean and dry, reassemble in the order of rubber ring (placed directly on the jar base opening), then blades, then jar skirt.

In bullet blenders, you can slip something like a butter knife under the ring and pop it off. To reassemble, use your fingers to push it back in place. Make sure it is completely sealed in position, and check the manual for any blender-specific instructions.

Can I Use a Blender Without a Rubber Ring?

The short answer is no.

If you’ve ever blended without a rubber ring on the blender, you’ll know that it’s not a good idea.

Without the rubber ring, the blender is likely to leak and/or make strange sounds.

Not only is it necessary for a proper seal, but a rubber gasket acts like a soft and insulated washer; you need some sort of cushioning between a glass or plastic blending jug and a metal or plastic blade assembly. Using a blender without a gasket it would be like using breaks without break pads.

When using a blender, you also want to make sure that your gasket is in good condition. If your blender is really old and starts leaking, it might just be because the rubber ring is wearing down or damaged and the seal isn’t as tight. In this case, it’s time to replace it. You can purchase gasket replacements for all types of blenders.

How Do You Make a Gasket for a Blender?

While a gasket is easy enough to swap out and replace, you may also consider making a gasket for your blender.

I’ve seen quite a few people who have easily and affordably made their own gaskets at home with just a few supplies.

The material you need to make a gasket for a blender is food-grade silicon, preferably heat-safe as well, with a smooth surface (no texture or mesh). The thickness of the silicon should be the same as the original gasket of the blender. Make sure you keep your old gasket to use as a reference and template.

All you need to do is trace the old gasket on the silicon and cut it out using an exacto knife. And voila, you have a home made gasket! Give it a test run with water and make any adjustments as needed.

Conclusion

A rubber ring, or gasket, is an important component of a blender, as it prevents leakage. The gasket placed between the blending container and the blade assembly to create a seal.

You cannot use a blender properly without a gasket, so make sure your gasket is in good condition and is sealed on properly…or make your own!

I bought a new Nutri Bullet 1200, but it came without a rubber Seal. I inserted a rubber seal, but now I can’t push it down to start.
